Segment 3

Construction Activity

Segment 3 Construction is broken down into four quadrants:

  • SE Quadrant (2020) - Northbound I-75 and Service Drive from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • SW Quadrant (2021) - Southbound I-75 and Service Drive from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • NE Quadrant (2022) - Northbound I-75 and Service Drive from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road
  • NW Quadrant (2023) - Southbound I-75 and Service Drive from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road

In addition, the new drainage system/tunnel improvements will be continuous into early 2024.  

2023 Construction will focus on the southbound roadway from 13 Mile Road to I-696.

Roadway Construction

  • Rebuild SB I-75 from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road.
  • Rebuild SB service drive from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road. 

Bridge Construction

  • Rebuild vehicular bridges at:
    • 12 Mile Road Bridge over SB I-75 and Interchange.

Two I-75 lanes in each direction will remain open during construction.

2022 Construction will focus on the northbound roadway from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road.

Roadway Construction

  • Rebuild NB I-75 from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road.
  • Rebuild NB service drive from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road. 

Bridge Construction

  • Rebuild vehicular bridges at:
    • Lincoln Avenue,
    • Gardenia Avenue,
    • 12 Mile Road Bridge over NB I-75 and Interchange,
    • Northbound I-75 over 13 Mile Road.

2022 Construction Brochure

Two I-75 lanes in each direction will remain open during construction.

2021 Construction will focus on the southbound roadway from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696.

Roadway Construction

  • Rebuild SB I-75 from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I 696.
  • Rebuild SB service drive from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696. - Portions of the southbound service drive will be closed and detoured.
  • Rebuild southbound I-75 from 2,000 feet south of 13 Mile Road to 1,000 feet
    north of 13 Mile Road.

Bridge Construction

  • Rebuild vehicular bridges at:
    • Shevlin Avenue,
    • 11 Mile Road, and
    • southbound
      I-75 over 13 Mile Road.

Pedestrian Bridge Construction:

  • Rebuild pedestrian bridges at:
    • Highland Avenue,
    • Browning Avenue, and
    • Bellaire Avenue.

Two I-75 lanes in each direction will remain open during construction.

2020 Construction will focus on the northbound roadway from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696.

Road Construction

  • Construct NB Roadway and service drive from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • Construct NB Ramps from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • Construct NB Retaining Walls from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • Start Tunnel Work in Spring
  • Continue constructing Sound Walls

Bridge Construction

  • Complete reconstruction of Harry Ave., Bernhard Ave. and Orchard Ave. Pedestrian bridges
  • Complete reconstruction of Woodward Hts., Meyers Ave., John R Road bridges 
  • Pier replacement for 9 Mile Road bridge 
  • Permanent Removal of John R Road East U-turn to NB I-75, John R Road West U-turn to SB I-75, and 9 Mile South U-turn to NB I-75 bridges

2020 Tentative Bridge Construction Plan

Tunnel Construction

  • Launch Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)
  • Mine Tunnel from I-696/I-75 Interchange Launch site north to the Pump Station north of 12 Mile Road
  • Start construction of the Tunnel Pump Station north of 12 Mile Road
  • Construct Shevlin, Woodward Heights and John R Road Tunnel Inlet Drop Shafts south of I-696

  • Temporary freeway median crossover construction
  • Temporary pavement widening for maintaining traffic during future construction years
  • Demo Dallas Avenue Bridge
  • Advance Sound Walls on NB Service Dr. from I-696 to the North
  • Add temporary Road on SB I-75 from M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696
  • Add temporary I-75 crossovers at M-102 (8 Mile Road) and I-696

Construction activity for Segment 3 will continue through the winter months. There are no expected lane closures for the freeway until the Spring of 2020.
